Campaigns SDG Voices taking off

In September 2016, together with the FIDO, we appointed 8 organisations to promote the SDGs in Belgium. Six months later, these SDG Voices’ campaigns are resonating across the country. Below is an overview of the most outstanding and interesting initiatives.

Shortly after its appointment, 11.11.11 took stock of the current situation of SDGs in Belgium. A survey by CNCD-11.11.11 revealed that only 10 percent of the population had heard of them and that the majority did not think this ambitious development agenda was very realistic. Another reason to show that the goals are fully achievable by 2030 through concrete campaigns!

At the Palace and in the Senate

At the beginning of 2017, the Voices shared their planned actions with Queen Mathilde during a meeting at the palace. They exchanged ideas about the importance of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and looked at ways of further promoting them together in Belgium. As a global advocate of the SDGs, the Queen warmly invited everyone to join forces, and emphasised the importance of open dialogue between the various actors.

GoodPlanet Belgium kicked off its campaign with the Human Migration exhibition in which they outlined the history and future of a sustainable society. Afterwards, they brought together female members of parliament and a number of young people from Brussels at the Senate. They discussed gender equality in the context of International Women’s Day on March 8. DUO for a JOB is also preparing a video campaign about fighting inequality.

SDG Challenges & Food for thought

Since the beginning of March, the city of Ghent has been drawing attention to the SDGs in a playful manner by means of 5 SDG Challenges. For example, they are challenging the city of Sint-Niklaas and its inhabitants to eat less meat, together with Genk they are try to make everyone a feminist and with the city of Liège, they are going back to school for a learning marathon.

The city of Ghent was recently awarded the first Food Waste Award for its food recovery campaigns in which, among others, Colruyt is also involved. Bond Beter Leefmilieu, for its part, is fuelling the debate around SDGs with inspiring videos. Find out below how they are focusing on initiatives for dealing with food sustainably and city mobility. And anyone who is yearning for even more sustainable food can visit the Petite Foire organised by Mouvement Action Paysanne (MAP) in July this year.

All these SDG Voices were appointed on 26 September 2016 to promote the sustainable development agenda of the UN to the general public.
