Cargill provides food, agriculture, financial and industrial products and services to the world. Together with farmers, customers, governments and communities, we help people thrive by applying our insights and 150 years of experience. We have 150,000 employees in 70 countries who are committed to feeding the world in a responsible way, reducing environmental impact and improving the communities where we live and work. Cargill believes that the Sustainable Development Goals affirm our important work in the areas of food security and sustainability and we can demonstrate many examples in support of this agenda, especially through our efforts to improve access to safe, affordable, nutritious food.
The Shift helps members to make use of the global framework of the UN Sustainable Development Goals to map their societal ambitions.
2. End hunger
As a company committed to being the global leader in nourishing people, Cargill’s focus is on improving access to safe, affordable and nutritious food. We advocate for policy that moves food from areas of surplus to areas of need, and we participate in a number of global forums to advocate for food security and nutrition, such as the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition, Food Fortification Initiative and the Scaling Up Nutrition Business Network. Cargill supports over 20 national food banks around the world, and is a member of the Global Foodbanking Network which works globally to establish food bank networks. Cargill also works to support sustainable agriculture through promoting best practices in agriculture through farmer training programs globally, as well as our responsible supply chain efforts in palm, soy, cocoa and cotton. Every year around World Food Day, Cargill employees across Belgium collect and sort food products to be able to serve healthy breakfasts to upwards of 1,000 people living in food poverty. During Cargill in Izegem’s annual safety day, a team of employee volunteers also assembled 300 food packages to donate to the local food bank De Stamper. In Mechelen some 200 food packages were assembled for a local organisation.
17. Partnerships for the goals
Cargill welcomes the acknowledgement of the role of the diverse private sector, ranging from micro-enterprises to cooperatives to multinationals, in supporting the implementation of the new agenda. We believe the private sector plays a key role in helping to drive economic growth and development, particularly in connecting directly with targeted communities to increase investment and infrastructure. Cargill’s partnership with TechnoServe and Partners in Food Solutions is promoting food security, nutrition and local economic growth through an innovative collaboration between the private sector, government, and civil society. Partners in Food Solutions links the technical and business expertise of corporate employee volunteers to small and growing African food processors. A number of Cargill employees from Belgium have actively taken part in volunteering assignments with Partners in Food Solutions.
