Colruyt Group is a retail group active in the distribution of food products and non-food products throughout Belgium, France and Luxembourg, with around 500 stores under its own management and over 500 affiliated stores. In Belgium, these stores include Colruyt, OKay, Bio-Planet, CRU, Dreamland and Dreambaby and affiliated stores Spar and Spar Compact. In France, in addition to the affiliated stores Coccinelle, CocciMarket and Panier Sympa, the group also boasts some 70 Colruyt stores. The group is also active in the food service sector in Belgium with its brand Solucious. The other areas of activity include fuel distribution (DATS 24), digital printing solutions and document management (Symeta) and green energy production (Eoly). Furthermore we have our own production facilities for meat processing, bread production, cheese cutting, wine bottling, coffee roasting, All companies and supporting activities of Colruyt Group have one common identity and culture, summarised in our mission statement: creating sustainable added value together, through value-driven craftsmanship in retail. Sustainability is part of the DNA of Colruyt Group. With a minimum of raw materials, energy and human effort, we want to ensure a maximum of meaningful economic growth, human and social development. In everything we undertake, we want to generate a positive and long-term effect on People, Product and Planet. We believe that this integrated approach is necessary to tackle complex social issues. We concretely work on important social themes that influence us as a retailer today and tomorrow and where we have an assignment such as climate change and biodiversity. 7. Affordable and clean energy
Colruyt Group joined RE100, a collaborative, global initiative of influential businesses committed to 100 % renewable electricity. By massively increasing the demand for renewable energy, RE100 wants to accelerate the transformation of the international energy market and the evolution to a low carbon society.
8. Decent work and economic growth
In recent years, we have recruited between 2,600 and 3,000 new employees per year, for a wide range of positions in all regions. Taking into account an average growth of 8%, Colruyt Group accounts for a net increase of one thousand jobs per year. With this sustainable job creation, we make a significant contribution to society, especially because we recruit a relatively large number of low-skilled workers or people who would otherwise find it hard to get work.
11. Sustainable cities and communities
By testing the concept of the Office on Wheels, a bus transporting its employees together to their HQ, Colruyt group commits to rethink mobility for its employees and to reduce its environmental impact, help reduce traffic congestion and improve air quality in cities and communities.
12. Responsible consumption and production
At Colruyt Group, we feel it is our duty to (help) limit food loss as much as possible, both in our own activities and in the links in the chain before and after us. After all, there exists global food loss in all the links in the chain: during production, transport, and storage of raw materials, in the food industry, in the store or restaurant, with the consumer, etc. And that is a shame, especially keeping in mind the enormous food scarcity in the world, but also because food loss causes a lot of unnecessary environmental problems, as well as financial losses. As a retailer we too are aware of the street litter problem. We are willing to use our weight to help develop a sustainable solution. Colruyt Group strongly believes that, with the help of suppliers, employees and customers, we can indeed make a difference and bring about a positive change of behaviour.
13. Climate action
In 2014, Colruyt Group's relative greenhouse gas emissions were 19.65 tonnes per million euro turnover, or 3.8% less than in 2013. Through many projects in, among others, construction, heating, cooling, cargo transport, and passenger transport, we want to decrease the relative emissions by 20% by 2020, as compared to the base year of 2008.
14. Life below water
Colruyt Group is closely monitoring the sustainability of its fish, mollusc and shellfish brands. In our fishery products, we strive to preserve adequate fish populations, use environmentally sound fishing methods and inform you about animal welfare, etc. For our aquaculture products, the farms must minimise their impact on the environment and provide decent working conditions.
15. Life on land
Colruyt has the ambition to use 100% sustainable wood by 2017. It is our goal that all of our private label products are made of virgin wood or recycled wood with an FCS or PEFC hallmark. These labels guarantee that the products are actually made from recycled materials or originate from sustainably controlled forests. Colruyt Group also has the target to use 100% certified palm oil by 2018 (RSPO “segregated”) in its house brands.
