Enabel is the Belgian development agency. We implement and coordinate Belgium’s international development policy and carry out public service assignments in Belgium and abroad under the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Our 1500 staff members in Brussels and in our 14 overseas offices embody the commitment of the Belgian State and other development partners to international solidarity. We build a sustainable world where women and men live under the rule of law and are free to pursue their aspirations. We are a European player enhancing the impact of Belgium in international development. As a knowledge centre we think and act in terms of strategy and policy influence to promote sustainable development. We can quickly mobilise expertise through our networks to implement sustainable development initiatives which are in line with the priorities of Belgium and the objectives of our partners.
The Shift helps members to make use of the global framework of the UN Sustainable Development Goals to map their societal ambitions.
8. Decent work and economic growth
Enabel is committed to promote inclusive, equitable and sustainable economic growth, giving priority to local entrepreneurship, the social economy and the Decent Work Agenda of the International Labour Organization. Enabel manages a specific program called Trade for Development Center (TDC), which aims to provide better market access for producer groups to boost their income.
13. Climate action
Enabel is committed to support developing countries in their efforts towards addressing climate change. To this end, we ensure climate mainstreaming in each project taking into account climate change impact on the project’s sustainability as well as ensuring that our actions do not induce environmental risks. We also develop specific innovative actions intended to strengthen capacities, support national policies on climate issues integration and increase accessibility to climate funds.
16. Peace, justice & strong institutions
Most interventions of Enabel take place in fragility and/or conflict/post-conflict situations. In those contexts, specific attention goed to migration. Knowing that migration is part of the local social-economic development, our main objective on this topic is to promote benefits of migration for host and departure communities as well as migrants themselves (economic migrants, refugees, etc.). We work on programs to strengthen links between diaspora and departure countries, facilitate migrants/refugees economic integration and/or reintegration through training, skills development and employment opportunities.
