13. Climate action

We believe we have a responsibility to actively engage in global efforts to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and to help lead the global transition to a low-carbon, climate-resilient economy.

17. Partnerships for the goals

Triodos Bank’s mission is to make money work for positive social, environmental and cultural change. Which means the impact we’re interested in is the effect of our activity on society, the environment and culture. To ensure our influence is positive we only invest in sustainable enterprises and we only use the ‘real’ money entrusted to us by savers and investors. Our lending process reflects our focus on delivering positive impact and integrates environmental sustainability, human dignity and economic resilience so that the enterprises we lend to can help improve people’s quality of life. As well as financing progressive entrepreneurs, we also want to influence the banking sector itself, to help deliver our mission. Because the more sustainable, diverse and transparent the banking industry, the more we believe people’s quality of life will improve. Triodos Bank’s six steps to change the banking sector 1. Embed our values and systemic sustainability thinking into our operations 2. Only finance social, environmental and cultural projects that create a positive impact 3. Apply rigorous lending and investment criteria and develop specialist sector knowledge 4. Be transparent about who we lend to and our business model 5. Prove that a values-based banking model can be commercially robust and resilient 6. Collaborate at a practical and strategic level with other values-based financial institutions around the world to help grow a movement, and influence the wider banking sector on the strength of our impact.

7. Affordable and clean energy

Triodos Bank considers energy to be a basic human need and therefore something that we need to ensure is being generated and used on a sustainable basis for future generations. We see the potential for renewable energy technologies and energy efficiency measures to create a more resilient, decentralised and sustainable energy system that’s equipped to deal with these challenges in the future. Having financed renewable energy projects for 25 years, we aim to further increase the impact of renewable energy and energy efficiency projects. We focus our attention on the deployment of mature technologies such as wind energy and solar power in order to contribute to the necessary transition to our energy system.
