EFICO is a medium-sized green coffee specialist, established in 1926. With headquarters in Antwerp, Belgium, and offices in Germany, Switzerland, Brazil, Ethiopia and Guatemala, we aim to provide tailor-made services to our clients ‘with a personal touch’. The EFICO Group has a longstanding family history and differentiates itself by offering a complete concept throughout the Green Coffee Supply Chain, From Flower to Cup. Tradition and technology go hand in hand. Quality, Food Safety, Traceability and Sustainability are EFICO’s cornerstones. The EFICO team strongly believes in the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) Principles, to which we were the first coffee trading company to sign up to in the sector in 2003. Responsible entrepreneurship is part of our ‘Coffee Genes’. Our ambition towards a sustainable coffee supply chain is amongst others reflected in the investment in SEABRIDGE, a state-of-the-art sustainable warehouse and distribution center for green coffee in the port of Zeebrugge, where green and high-qualitative logistics prevail. With the EFICO Foundation we make a difference by supporting sustainable multi-stakeholder projects in coffee producing countries with the aim to positively impact the livelihoods, prosperity and environment of the coffee communities in a structural way.

12. Responsible consumption and production

Sourcing our raw material responsibly is key to EFICO. Our family tradition of being a medium-sized company empowers us to establish long-term strategies and partnerships based on mutual trust and respect. The selection of our business partners has always been a special focus. By implementing a sustainable sourcing policy, we aim to support the long-term supply of quality coffee, whilst preserving ecosystem services for future generations. Today the sector is challenged to distinguish various certification schemes, in addition to company’s private product requirements and verification systems. We actively promote the commercialization of sustainable coffees. At present, more than 50% of EFICO’s purchasing volume is verified or certified against sustainability standards. EFICO continues to share its know-how on coffee and sustainability with its stakeholders. We are convinced that quality will generate the ultimate consumer satisfaction for a cup of coffee. Through a close dialogue we support our clients in the selection of the right products and services, and create added value in the supply chain.

8. Decent work and economic growth

EFICO’s ambition is to continue investing in solid and long-term business relations and create win-win partnerships. More than 80% of our coffees sourced come from cooperatives, unions or local exporters, boosting local development and economic growth. At EFICO sustainability and economic growth go hand in hand. We continuously work on our economic success within the scope of a sustainable business approach. By using safe, environment-friendly products and sound technologies, we aim to decouple economic growth from environmental degradation. EFICO’s Code of Conduct and values are inspired by the UNGC and SDG framework. Respect and reciprocal trust are an integral part of the values we uphold. Our corporate values describe what we strive for and shape the ethical personality of our Group. They guide and determine the way we trade, the services, the products and the support we provide to all our stakeholders. By taking ownership of these values and by implementing an ambitious sustainable approach, EFICO aims to support the UN Secretary-General's vision: a more sustainable and inclusive global economy.

7. Affordable and clean energy

EFICO’s commitment towards affordable and clean energy fits within a broader concept, launched in 2008: CO2 reduction and compensation of the green coffee supply chain. We are convinced that action should be taken at the place where emissions occur. Leading by example, the goal set at EFICO Group is to use 100% green energy; i.e. energy coming from renewable sources. Today, more than 50% of the green energy is produced on-site by solar panels at SEABRIDGE. We intend to further expand our own production of green energy to compensate 100% of the total energy use of the EFICO Group. Additionally, we focus on energy efficiency increase, recycling of minimum 95% of all waste streams according to the Cradle-to-Cradle principles, green logistics by transport optimization and barge & train transport between the Belgian Ports. Via our EFICO Foundation we promote renewable energy use in remote areas in coffee producing countries and climate adaptation and mitigation strategies for farmers. In 2009, a Pilot Project was initiated by EFICO and EFICO Foundation together with the Rainforest Alliance and Anacafé : “Climate-Friendly Practices at Finca El Platanillo, Guatemala”. This pioneer project was the basis for the establishment of the “Climate Module”, a standard for Climate Friendly Products within the Sustainable Agriculture Network (SAN). Thanks to this project, El Platanillo Farm saves 15,080,173 liters of water per year, equivalent to the water consumption of 20,660 persons for a year. The farm also emits 1,360 kilograms of CO2 less and saves up to 38,327 liters of fuel per year in comparison with a traditional coffee processing station. EFICO’s ambition is to further extend these efforts and thus realizing a positive impact on both daily lives and the environment.

4. Quality education

At EFICO, we believe that access to education provides the basis for a sustainable future: knowledge is progress. Via the EFICO Foundation, several projects focus on training and education. By increasing the level of education of children, youngsters and adults, better opportunities are given for the future. Gender equity - and thus the importance that both men and women are treated equally and receive the same opportunities to make progress - is key. By continuing to reinforce empowerment in producing countries, we contribute to sharing of knowledge and responsibilities, democratic decision making, investment in learning processes, and development of local confidence in own capacities. This results in reinforced spiritual, political, social and economic strength of individuals and communities. The EFICO group of companies does not discriminate according to gender or other characteristics. This vision is amongst others supported by our selection, evaluation and promotion policy. By continuing to invest in both internal and external training, EFICO colleagues can further improve their knowledge and personal growth.

17. Partnerships for the goals

Sustainable development is an international challenge and cannot be met unless every one of us contributes. EFICO therefore fully supports the SDG Framework, as an inclusive and global framework to innovate and make progress. On an ongoing basis we attend and actively participate in many discussions that can influence the CSR agenda locally and globally. Being an active member of different sustainability initiatives, it is the EFICO Group’s ambition to be a catalyst within the coffee industry and beyond. By thinking globally and acting locally, sustainability can be put into practice. To achieve this transition, a multi-stakeholder approach is needed. At EFICO, we stimulate our stakeholders by giving advice, encouragement towards sustainability, exchanging knowledge and passion, aiming to create added value throughout the supply chain. The future will only be assured for those who embrace this philosophy. Therefore enthusiasm, creativity and pro-active thinking are crucial to make progress. With our EFICO Foundation, we federate and stimulate public-private partnerships. It is known as an open initiative, a unique vector and a flexible tool to achieving multi-stakeholder participation in the development of our coffee projects.

13. Climate action

By signing the COP21 engagement letter, we commit to take voluntary action to reduce environmental and carbon footprints. We implement this by setting targets to reduce our current own GHG emissions and/or energy consumption, while also collaborating in supply chains and at sectorial levels. We agree on the need for inspirational and meaningful global action and aligned messaging. We will act as ambassadors for climate action, focusing on solutions and economic opportunities. We will help raise public awareness. We will actively manage climate risks and incorporate them in decision making — not least to realize growth opportunities. We will take steps to implement effective strategies to strengthen not only our companies’ but also societal resilience.
