Profiel

Sustainability means for Spadel to “strive towards a harmonious and respectful relationship between man and nature”. The organization wants to bring the best of nature to the consumer: pure natural mineral water. Not only for us today but also for future generations. Sustainability is therefore not a buzzword for Spadel but a key element of our mission. The sustainability strategy Spadel focuses on three main pillars: Sustainable management of water resources and biodiversity and continuous a quality control (Nature's best close to you), sustainable packaging policy, reducing energy consumption in the sites, optimizing transport and responsible procurement (Our footprint) and the experience of the 'values' of Spadel as employer (Great place to work).

Ambities

The Shift helpt leden gebruik maken van het globaal kader van de UN Sustainable Development Goals om hun maatschappelijke ambities in kaart te brengen.

6. Clean water and sanitation

Spadel attaches great importance to the protection of the areas where the natural mineral water is extracted. Spadel, therefore, develops and implements several protection measures in collaboration with local actors (regional and municipal governments, fire departments, etc.). In addition, Spadel exploits the water without depleting it. Between 2010 and 2015 Spa and Bru managed to reduce their water footprint by 20% per litre. 8. Decent work and economic growth

"One Team, One Company": Spadel encourages its employees to live a healthy lifestyle and also strives to be a Great Place to WorkTM. The work environment and the welfare of its employees is certainly important for Spadel. Read more about Spadel’s actions towards a Great Place to WorkTM and employees healthy lifestyle in its sustainability report on www.sustainabilityspadel.com.

12. Responsible consumption and production

Spadel consciously chooses to be a regional player and procures the majority of its resources in a limited radius of 500 km. In partnerships with Ecovadis, Spadel supports its suppliers to become truly sustainable partners. Spadel optimizes the use of its resources as well. The weight of the Spa Reine bottle, for example, is reduced by 45% in 30 years. This bottle consist even of 50% recycled PET. Spadel is founding partner of Fost Plus. All of its bottles are 100% recyclable. With regard to its ingredients, Spadel chooses only for natural substances and processes in the development of its new products. 13. Climate action

Spadel has set itself the target of becoming carbon-neutral by 2020. To achieve this ambitious goal, Spadel puts, in first instance, a lot of effort in the reduction of its carbon footprint. The actions are based on reducing the energy consumption of the production sites, reducing and optimizing its packagings and the optimization of the logistics. Read more about Spadel’s carbon footprint in its sustainability report on www.sustainabilityspadel.com.

15. Life on land

The total Water Protection Zone (WPZ) of Spa alone covers some 13,177 hectares. 1,343 hectares of the Water Protection Zone are Natura 2000 land and 64 hectares are nature reserve. Since 2012, Spadel has supported the European project LIFE+ “Ardenne Liégoise” in order to improve the natural and semi-natural habitats in the wetlands of the High Ardennes. Other Spadel sites are also located in Water Protection Zones. To measure the progress of biodiversity Spadel has worked since 2014 with the organization BeeOdiversity. Together, under the project name BeeSpa, Spadel installed various beehives in the protected area of Spa. After all, bees are excellent measuring instruments for the quality of the environment and for biodiversity. The early results are most encouraging. Due to a high biodiversity, the local environment is highly conducive to the spread of the bees and their reproduction. 17. Partnerships for the goals

With the objective of making the company a responsible partner in society, Spadel has entered into a number of strategic partnerships. By these partnerships, Spadel aims to raise awareness for a better hydration and a balanced diet. GoodPlanet Belgium, in collaboration with Spadel, organizes more than 100 workshops with GoodPlanet on hydration in primary and junior schools. The university of Ghent researched hydration at school-age children with the support of Spadel. 3. Good health
