4. Quality education

Students engage in a sustainable, humanistic society and acquire knowledge and skills for sustainable development in and in addition to their curriculum.

Sustainability is part of the curriculum that is ready for the future. That curriculum is characterized by interdisciplinarity, the acquisition of broad professional competencies and the stimulation of personal commitment. The campuses and the cosmopolitan Brussels provide an excellent learning and experimentation environment.

Concrete actions

With its own educational innovation projects, such as Univer.City, practice-oriented chair positions and participation in international research projects, VUB focuses on new forms of education, such as community engaged research and learning, and supports its staff in interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary collaborations. A good example of this is www.wetenschapswinkel.be.

By means of university-wide curriculum revisions, education about and for sustainable development is made concrete. The establishment of curriculum components such as 'Reasonably Quirky' (Reason and Engage), and 'Sustainability, an interdisciplinary approach' are a few examples. Also, within existing courses, the impact on society and the environment is being addressed more and more often.

With hand-on initiatives, such as the Circular Retrofit Lab, the VUB campuses become instructive experimental places for students. In such living lab environments, students get to work in a creative way, making their impact tangible. Another example is the Urban Ponds project, in which students, researchers and practitioners work together on sustainable water management.
